Surgical instruments have been manufactured for a long time and there have been reports that surgeons and doctors in India have been using these instruments for thousands of years. In Greece and Rome, ingenious instruments were developed from bronze, iron and silver.
The surgical instrument is a tool or device specially designed to perform specific actions and desired effects during a surgical procedure or operation. Over time, various different types of surgical tools and instruments have been invented.
Some surgical instruments are designed for use in general surgery, while others are designed for a specific procedure. Thus, the nomenclature of surgical instruments follows certain patterns, such as the description of the measures it performs (e.g. scalpel), the name of its inventor (the Kocher clamp), or a scientific compound related to the type
surgery.
For many years, the availability of biometals suitable for the manufacture of implants and surgical tools or utensils was scarce. But in the 20th century, with the growth of the number of surgeries, it was necessary the urgent improvement, expansion and improvement of the arsenal of support of doctors in their activities, as well as the most suitable materials for their manufacture. Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium, and may contain nickel, molybdenum and other elements that have higher physicochemical properties than common steels, with high resistance to atmospheric oxidation being its
main feature.
Stainless steel has great corrosion resistance, adequate mechanical strength, ease of cleaning/low surface roughness, ease of conformation, resistance to high and very low temperatures and its variations, surface finishes and varied shapes, modern visual appeal, clean and low maintenance cost. All these properties make stainless steel a very attractive material to satisfy various types of demands.
Of the martensitic alloys, the 440C stainless steel is the one that after tempered and revenated, offers the highest hardness, HRC 60, which becomes ideal for drills, males, scalpels, forms and wear parts. In order to compensate for the high carbon content of 0.9%-1.20%, stainless steel 440C, in addition to Chrome in the ratio of 16.0%-18.0%, also has an addition of molybdenum of max. 0.75%. The corrosion resistance of the 440C stainless steel is at the same level as the type
AISI 420.
Among the various types of stainless steel, the F899 440C, also found in the shape of Barra 440C, is used in the production of axes, pins, surgical and dental instruments, cutlery and rings.
The ASTM F899 standard recommends 15 stainless steels of class 4 (martensitic) and 4 others of class 5 (for precipitation hardening) for different applications. Among all, the most common are F899 420B and F899 440C, class 4 and XM 16, class 5.
