Technical details
The stainless steel was discovered by Harry Brearly while studying a Fe-Cr alloy (13%) and found that the manufactured alloy resisted most of the reagents used at the time. He himself named the league, calling it "stainless steel" which, translating, means "steak without stain". It popularly became known as stainless steel.
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium, and may contain nickel, molybdenum and other elements that have higher physicochemical properties than common steels, with high resistance to atmospheric oxidation being its main characteristic. Stainless steel can be classified into several families according to its microstructure. They are: ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, hardened by precipitation and Duplex.
Stainless steel has great corrosion resistance, adequate mechanical strength, ease of cleaning/low surface roughness, ease of conformation, resistance to high and very low temperatures and its variations, surface finishes and varied shapes, modern visual appeal, clean and low maintenance cost. All these properties make stainless steel a very attractive material to satisfy various types of applications.
Austenitic stainless steel is the steel most used in orthopedic implants, since it has high corrosion resistance, fatigue and fracture properties. These stainless steel properties are parameters of high importance for determining the most suitable material for biomedical applications, in addition to biocompatibility.

The standard that specifies the correct use of stainless steel for implants is ASTM F139 – "Standard Specification for Wrought 18Chromium 14Nickel 2.5Molybdenum Stainless Steel Sheet and Strip for Surgical Implants" (UNS S31673). In this standard are standards to be met to preserve the quality of stainless steel F139.
With the F139 stainless steel (available on tape or plate), many of the medical devices are developed to promote bone stabilization, correction and fixation.
