Technical details

The term Nitinol designates a set of Ni (Niquel) and Ti (Titanium) alloys that present the property of "form memory effect". A Nitinol object at room temperature is easy to bend, but after an apparent deformation it becomes rigid and recovers its original shape when heated above a given temperature. It is a phase change in the solid state (austenite/martensite). Nitinol alloys have 48-60%Ni and the rest of Ti.

Nitinol was discovered in the 1960s at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory (NOL) in White Oak, Maryland. The name of the Nitinol alloy is composed of the chemical symbols of the elements (Ni, Ti) along with the laboratory acronym (NOL).

Nitinol is a material that has excellent biocompatibility, i.e. compatibility with organic tissues. Therefore, Nitinol has been widely used in bioengineering applications as a material for cardiac valve tools, guide wires for catheterization, minimally invasive surgical instruments, hip implants, bone clamps and skull plates.

As we can see, the possibilities of using Nitinol alloys are numerous and range from artificial muscles to cars that break down alone after a collision. There are also applications in robotics, which employs Nitinol wires for the construction of "artificial muscles" intended for the movement of robots or similar. In this application, an electric current crosses the device with Nitinol, causes its heating and the consequent change
In shape.

This application of Nitinol is, however, restricted, as the movements thus obtained are quite slow compared to other available technologies.

For the areas of implants and medical applications, Nitinol ASTM F2063 is defined by the specifications of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American normalization organ. ASTM develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems and services.

The international standard that specifies the use of Nitinol in surgical and orthopedic implants is ASTM F2063 – Standard Specification for Wrought Nickel-Titanium Shape Memory Alloys for Medical Devices and Surgical Implants, which determines the standards of Nitinol to be used in such procedures and in particular the F2063 alloy.
