The term Biomaterial designates any material used in the manufacture of devices to replace a body part or function in a safe, reliable, economical and physiologically acceptable manner.

In this field of medical study, cobalt alloys were originally proposed for surgical implants more than 70 years ago.

Three generations of biomaterials are usually identified. The first focused more on efficiency than design, using inert materials such as gold, steel, ivory, wood, glass, silicone, acrylic and polymethylmethacrylate, used to fill, cover and connect. The second generation employed materials with a higher degree of engineering, using the experiences of the first generation and complementing them with the new advances in medicine, engineering and materials science. In this phase, the known titanium and cobalt-chrome-molybdenum CCM alloys (CoCrMo) emerged for orthopedic and dental implants.

The market basically uses two types of Co alloys for medical application. The first is the CoCrMo Alloy, used for coating and machined parts. The second type is Co-Ni-Cr-Mo alloys.

For the areas of implants and medical applications, the CoCrMo Alloy F1537 to be used is defined by the specifications of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American normalization organ. ASTM develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems and services. In the specific case of the CoCrMo Alloy (F1537), ASTM F1537 – "Standard Specification for Wrought Cobalt-28Chromium-6Molybdenum Alloys for Surgical Implants" (UNS R31537, UNS R31538, and UNS R31539) is the standard to be followed.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) lists four Co alloys that are recommended for application in surgical implants: CoCrMo coating alloy (F75); Co-Cr-W-Ni (F90), Co-Ni-Cr-Mo (F562) and CoCrMo (F1537).

These types of alloys, including the CoCrMo Alloy (F1537), also available in Barra F1537/Barra Cobalto Chrome/Barra CCM, make up a special class of materials highly resistant to corrosion in physiological medium and wear, being much superior to stainless steel alloys.

In addition, CoCrMo Alloy (F1537) has a higher fatigue resistance limit and has its most recommended application in procedures that require longevity, without the occurrence of fractures or stress/fatigue.

The special features of the CoCrMo Alloy (F1537), make it the ideal material for use in various medical applications, and more specifically, in the procedures aimed at replacing joint surfaces. The properties of wear resistance, corrosion and low friction coefficient, inherent to the CoCrMo Alloy (F1537), are decisive to be preferred by medical professionals in these areas.
