The standard that specifies the correct and appropriate use of square flat bars is ASTM F139 "Standard Specification for Wrought 18Chromium 14Nickel 2.5Molybdenum Stainless Steel Sheet and Strip for Surgical Implants" (UNS S31673). In it are standards to be met to preserve the quality of square flat bars for, production of special plates for bone synthesis, specifying characteristics and the corresponding test methods for conformable stainless steels for use in the manufacture of surgical implants.
